Nuclear power is a form of energy production that harnesses the heat released by splitting atoms, usually uranium, in a process called nuclear fission. It has distinct advantages and disadvantages when compared to other energy sources.

Advantages of nuclear power include its ability to produce large amounts of electricity with very low greenhouse gas emissions. Nuclear power also provides a steady and reliable energy supply, operating continuously and unaffected by weather conditions. This makes it a strong base-load power source. However, there are several disadvantages. The most concerning is the production of radioactive waste, which remains hazardous for thousands of years and requires secure, long-term storage. There is also the risk of accidents, such as the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters, which had devastating environmental and human impacts. Another challenge is the high cost of building, operating, and decommissioning nuclear plants. These projects often face delays and budget overruns. Lastly, the potential for nuclear proliferation—the spread of nuclear weapons technology—is a significant concern.
